Release Date: October 25, 2016
Publisher: The Chicken House
Format: Hardcover
Goodreads | Amazon

Summary from Goodreads:
Lydia is the youngest of the five Bennet girls. She's stubborn, never listens, and can't seem to keep her mouth shut--not that she would want to anyway. She's bored with her country life and wishes her older sisters would pay her attention . . . for once!

Luckily, the handsome Wickham arrives at Longbourn to sweep her off her feet. Lydia's not going to let him know THAT, of course, especially since he only seems to be interested in friendship. But when they both decide to summer in the fasionable seaside town of Brighton, their paths become entangled again.

At the seaside, Lydia also finds exciting new ways of life and a pair of friends who offer her a future she never dreamed of. Lydia finally understands what she really wants. But can she get it?

A fresh, funny, and spirited reimagining of Jane Austen's beloved Pride and Prejudice, The Secret Diary of Lydia Bennet brings the voice of the wildest Bennet sister alive and center stage like never before.

What I Thought: So.. I really love Pride and Prejudice, like a lot. Because of that, I'm a sucker for any retelling of the classic in any form. There've been some EXCELLENT ones (The Lizzie Bennet Diaries!!!) and some unique ones (Eligible by Curtis Sittenfeld) and then... this one.

It definitely wasn't a bad read. I really liked the story, honestly -- where Lydia went, why her and Wickham ran away together, and how things resolved. I think all in all, the plot was decent, and did a good job filling in the blanks that most Elizabeth perspectives leave out.

HOWEVER. It sort of felt like I was reading reasonably good P&P fan fiction, rather than a real and published book. It read like someone trying really hard to emulate the language and feeling of Austin and just not quite hitting the mark.

I just want to love poor Lydia so badly, and every retelling makes her so unlikable. This is the closest I've come to liking her, but even here... Her own diary didn't make me able to love her, and I feel like if this were just a little more well written, it would have.

One major perk: It ignited a fire to reread P&P, so I'll probably be doing that soon.

Read this if: you really like Pride and Prejudice and are willing to read a decent plot poorly written.
Hey guys! So, my older kid pretty much never wore a bib, so we didn't really have any on hand. Baby E, however, is a little puke monster, so we find ourselves needing them this time around. I decided to try my hand at making them, and was surprised at how easy it ended up being.

(We were given SO MANY and we just use regular towels! So, I'm finding more and more creative ways to use them). The coolest part about this project, though, is I cut the main fabric using my Cricut Explore Air 2! I was under the impression that the Air series didn't cut fabric, but it does-- it just needs to be bonded with something like Heat & Bond. I don't have pictures of this step but the gist of it is: iron the Heat & Bond to the back of your fabric, peel the paper backing off and stick it on to your standard grip mat. Use the 'bonded fabric' setting on the Cricut.

From there, it's a standard project as if you'd cut the fabric out with a normal pattern. I used the Cricut cut piece as a pattern to cut out the towel backing fabric. It shed and made a huge mess so I'm really glad that I didn't try that on the Cricut as well. The Heat & Bond adds some weight to the fabric, so if you don't use it, you might want some other sort of interfacing or something.

Place the fabrics right sides together, and sew, leaving a gap at the bottom center for turning. This step was the one downside to using the Head & Bond -- the fabric dragged on the presser foot really badly. I'm sure there has to be some way around this, because it's a common sewing product, but I struggled. The curves aren't too bad, even at the neck straps where it's more narrow.

Trim any excessive fabric around the edges, and turn right side in. Then topstitch around the entire bib, closing up the gap you left. Try to keep the bottom fabric pulled back so that the front looks cleaner.

Once that is done, you can either sew on velcro, or do what I did and somehow neglected to take pictures of, and use KAMSnap pliers and snaps. I prefer these snaps to the ones I would buy at the fabric store because they're plastic and easier to snap than the metal, and also because of the million colors they come in to coordinate.

And that's basically it! I'm probably going to end up whipping up 4 or 5 more of these throughout the week, so find me on instagram (@technicolor-moments) to see the rest.

When Kate and Mark meet up, little do they know how important they will become to each other—and how, in a very short time, they will know each other better than any of the people who are supposed to know them more.

Told in alternating points of view by Nina LaCour and David Levithan, You Know Me Well is a story about navigating the joys and heartaches of first love, one truth at a time.

What I Thought: I honestly have no idea how I missed a new David Levithan collaboration for well over a year, but as soon as I spotted it on the library shelf, I grabbed it immediately. As longtime readers of my life probably remember, David Levithan is my absolute, all time, 100% favorite author and -- SURPRISE -- he did not let me down.

The book takes place over one week and it's the last week of senior year for Mark & Kate and both Nina and David really manage to capture that feeling of everything ending and everything beginning at the same time. As always, the characters feel real and flawed and like people I've known and loved.

This story has love and heartbreak and dramatic teenagers and family drama and just- really everything a good YA book should have. It's also a fantastic LGBT story, featuring LGBT youth of all flavors and walks of life. But the great thing about the way the story is written is it's primarily a story about people who happen to be gay, not a BIG GAY BOOK, which I always appreciate. Stories like this normalize, as opposed to differentiate, and that's a very good thing.

All in all, the most I can say is I genuinely loved this book. It gave me the same good ol' David Levithan Book Feeling & also introduced me to Nina LaCour, who I can't wait to read more from.
Hey guys! I know this is my second diaper themed project in a row, but I couldn't pass this project up! CJ has started mimicking EVERYTHING we do with Baby E. When we feed the baby, CJ feeds her babies. When we change a diaper, she has to change one too. She was playing with some newborn sized disposables, but the other day she asked me for "pretty diapers" for her doll, so I had to make them. It ended up being WAY easier than I anticipated, but you do need basic sewing skills for this project.

I based the original pattern off of a newborn sized disposable diaper. I traced it on to a piece of construction paper and folded it in half to get a symmetrical pattern. Then, I wrapped it around her favorite doll and trimmed it down slowly until it looked like it just about would fit. Don't forget to leave a little bit of room for seam allowances when you do this, but in general just make sure it looks like it'll fit. In hindsight, I wish the back of the diaper (the tab end) came up a little bit higher, because if it were a real diaper, there'd be a little bit of plumber's crack showing. For a doll though, it's fine.
If you make your own cloth diapers, you can always use this as a scrap buster and make your kid & doll matching diapers! You also need an inner fabric, again you can scrap bust here, but I used a thin baby towel that we never use on the girls because of how thin it is. I was able to cut six diapers from one baby towel. Cut them out, and pin them right sides together, then sew leaving a gap to turn at the top center.

After it's sewn, turn it right side in, using a pen or a chopstick to poke out all of the corners. Topstitch around the entire diaper, closing up the gap you left to turn. Now personally, I hate topstitching and I never used to do it, but I've seen the error of my ways: thinks look so much nicer and more professional when they're topstitched, so I do it. The extra couple of minutes is worth it in the end for a nicely finished product.

Try to keep the inner fabric on the underside so you can't see it from the outside, but again, this diaper isn't technically a functional diaper, so if it's not perfect, it's okay.

Finally, add the Velcro. You can use snaps here, but Velcro is cheaper, easier and makes the diaper fit a wider range of dolls. I put an inch strip on each side tab, and a two inch strip in the front middle. Sew it into place. (You can probably use an iron on Velcro as well, but I don't usually have the best results with that.

Most of my clothes are from Target, Wal-Mart or so old I don't remember. But I do enjoy putting together outfits. It's just that since I've been staying home, I really have no excuse to, especially since some days I don't even leave the house.

That's why, last weekend, I made a commitment to get actual-dressed every day this week. It's Friday afternoon & I can honestly say that I did it! Even on the days I didn't leave the house, I got out of my pajamas and into something other than other pajamas or yoga pants. Here's what I wore:

Monday I started strong: I put JEANS ON. I legitimately don't even know the last time I wore these jeans, and they also kind of don't fit, but it was nothing a belt couldn't fix. I paired them with a tank top and a... I don't even know what to call it- it's not a cardigan? Either way, I've had it since my student teaching days, so 2011, and I'm pretty sure it was from Kohl's. I was uncomfortable all day because there's no need to wear jeans when you spend 90% of your time on the floor with kids, but I did it.

Tuesday I wore jean leggings & a tunic both from Wal-Mart. I love that shirt and I wear it all the time. This is how I pretty much dressed all the time when I was a preschool teacher: leggings and a tunic and it's how I'm most comfortable.

Wednesday was another interesting day. I'm trying to weed out my closet and I'm doing this by forcing myself to wear clothes I rarely/never wear, and if I don't love it by the end of the day, it goes into a donate box. I love the leggings (Lularoe) but I have only worn the shirt (Target Maternity, lol) once and I wasn't thrilled with it when I was pregnant with CJ. But, I put it on and actually kind of like it. I ended up wearing the belt a little lower than in the picture and it was cute and comfortable all day. I think I'm gonna keep it.

Thursday was the first day all week I knew I wasn't leaving the house, so I did comfortable again. Lula and a Wal-mart raglan. Honestly, I think this was one of the cuter outfits this week, so, there we go.

Friday I decided to again, dig into the closet I haven't worn in a while. I used to be obsessed with maxi skirts, I probably have somewhere in the range of 15, but I kind of stopped wearing them when I got more into leggings. However I have so many of them and I can't bring myself to get rid of them, so today is another love it or lose it day. So far, I feel like I'm just chillin' in a little blanket, so I think I'm going to bring these back and start wearing them more regularly.

So there we go: I got actually dressed in (what I think are) cute outfits every day this week. I think I'm going to try to keep this going. I feel better and more productive when I have real clothes on, and I have so many pieces I really love to wear. I don't think I'll keep blogging my outfits, but if I fall off the wagon and need accountability, I might.

What do you wear on a normal day? Especially if you're a stay at home person like I am, do you have a "uniform" you tend to stick to?

Technicolor Momentshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09603274395378957652noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2771273182795385733.post-91493667909825008542018-01-22T15:35:00.000-05:002018-01-26T11:52:39.353-05:00How to Replace Cloth Diaper ElasticsHey guys! Today I'm going to show you something that's pretty simple to do, but will save you a ton of money. We use cloth diapers on both CJ & Baby E, and most of our diapers have been around since CJ first started in them almost 2 years ago. We primarily use BumGenius Freetimes and they hold up amazingly and they really never let us down. The only thing that needs a little refresher once in a while is the elastics can loose their elastic-ness over time.

In my experience thus far, I've never needed to replace elastic twice in the same diaper, and in fact, most of the elastics I've needed to change are older than two years old, because I bought them second-hand. (Yes, you read that right. They've been stripped and bleached.)

This project only requires a few tools and very little sewing experience. Besides the stretched out diaper, you need a needle & thread, scissors and two safety pins. You also need elastic, 2 four inch pieces of 1/4 inch elastic. You can use any elastic, but today I used the bumGenius refresher pack. I tend to order these if I need to bump my order up another couple of dollars to hit free shipping because they're cheaper than shipping, but honestly normal elastic is definitely cheaper than these packs.

Cloth diaper elastic should be around 4 inches when it isn't being stretched. As you can see in the picture above, this diaper was close to six inches. You can tell the elastics need to be replaced when they aren't springy anymore and there are gaps around the leg.

The first thing you need to do is cut into the inner fabric of the diaper. I know this sounds scary but you only two tiny slits. Just be careful not to cut the PUL (the outer, waterproof part) and you'll be fine. To find where to cut just feel around the ends. You'll feel a little bump at each end where the elastic is, and just snip right where you feel the bump.

Cut one end, and use one of the safety pins to pin the elastic into place near the snip you made so the elastic doesn't get lost in the casing. Cut the other side, and attach the pin on the end. Then use that pin to feed the elastic through the casing, just kind of shuffling it down and then pin it in place. You should now have the piece of elastic in place where it will be and you can see what the diaper should look like! Keep both pins in place so that the elastic doesn't slip through and get lost.

Use a needle and thread to tightly sew the end into place. When you do this, make sure you catch the elastic in every stitch, and also try to close up the snip you made getting to the elastic. You want to catch a few different points in the elastic, because you definitely don't want this to slip out when the diaper is on. Tie a knot, snip your thread and then sew the other end into place.

Repeat the whole process on the other leg, and you have a fully functional diaper with fresh, springy elastics! It took me about one episode of Boy Meets World to do the whole diaper, and that was with time to stop and take pictures of each step.

This is WAY easier to do in a pocket diaper, because all you need to do is turn the whole thing inside out, through the pocket opening -- you can see where the elastics are to snip!
What I Thought: I picked up this book because We Were Liars was one of the most wonderfully told stories I've ever read, and I also have fond memories of Frankie Landau-Banks (even though it's been a while for that one), so I had high hopes for this. I can honestly say I was NOT let down.

I loved the non-chronology of the story, with the slow unravel. While this format takes away suspense, because the ending happens first, there's definitely something to be said for the slow reveal of everything that Jule & Imogen went through.

The characters were interesting and multi-dimensional, which I appreciate in a YA novel.

To be clear, this book is NOT We Were Liars part two, but it's still a really good book.

Read this if: if you're looking for stories with some mystery and suspense, but not a full on mystery.
I'm back! I haven't posted here since March of 2014 and a LOT has changed since then. To start with, that hellish year of deployment ended!
Our older daughter is 2 year old CJ, who loves French fries, coloring and the Magic School Bus. The younger is Baby E, who is currently 2 months old and loves being held, her pacifier and waking up at 4 am. I'm now a stay at home mom & spend my day trying to raise smart, kind humans.

I still love crafting and creating, and spend most naptimes working on projects for us & to sell on my newly refreshed etsy page. I haven't shared my projects anywhere in quite a while, so I'm looking forward to having a place to do that again. I've got a few ideas in mind for projects I want to do, so you'll be (hopefully!) seeing them shortly.

Reading is still something I love, but have less time to do these days. That being said, there will still be book reviews posted on the occasion I actually finish a book. I'm hoping to hit 20 books in 2018, so let's see how that goes!

In addition to those three main topics, I also hope to just have some general blog type stuff, reviews, and whatever else strikes. I hope you stick around for the ride :)

I'm Jenn: a 29 year old stay at home mom to two adorable little girls, two year old CJ and baby E. This blog has existed longer than either girl, so there's a heck of an archive to look back on, but this revival will have a good bit of mom stuff in addition to the craft projects & book reviews.

You can find all of my craft stuff here, mom stuff here, and book reviews here. Those are the main things that make up *me*, but I'm sure there will be plenty of other things here, too.

If you're looking to find me elsewhere on the internet, links are up along the top bar.

Welcome to Technicolor Moments, I hope you enjoy this ride as much as I do.
I wanted to send it out about a week ago because I wanted it to get to where it needed to be for our anniversary, which is April 13th. I don’t know if it’s going to make it or not, but I got it done so I’m sending it out tomorrow! A full month should be enough time.

The first thing I included were two cards. The first one with the text on the front had a lot of writing on the inside which was very nice and sentimental, and I went at it with a pen and sort of annotated it to make him laugh and fit us a little better. The second is a heart with a missing puzzle piece and the inside of the card has the missing piece and says “you complete me,” but most importantly LOOK HOW CUTE the envelope is!
He is not a big candy fan at all, with the exception of Snickers bars, so I got a huge bag of fun sized bars and filled the box with them. I just kind of tucked them between the shirts and hid them under other things. I kind of like the idea of them just falling out as he keeps pulling things out, so they're like a constant surprise that keep landing all over the place.
Peanut butter crackers and wasabi peas are a big favorite, and you can never go wrong with beef jerky, but the Sriacha peas were the crowning glory of my shopping trip. He loves the wasabi peas and loves Sriacha, so I can’t imagine he wouldn’t also LOVE them combined.

Finally, I also stuck in a flash drive that has a bunch of movies that have come out recently, and that I know he hasn’t seen yet. We were very sad that we weren’t able to see the LEGO movie together, so that’s on there, with about 10 others.

Obviously we’re both Pokemon freaks, so I drew a couple of different types of pokeballs, and then on the bottom flap wrote out “I choose you!” I think it looks really cute and I’m hoping he’ll like it.
So that’s what I’ve been working on lately. I am planning to send about 5 total, so we’ll see how that goes.
Are there any answers when someone you love makes a tragic choice?
After: everything she once believed has been destroyed in the wake of a shattering tragedy, and every day is there to be survived.
Can she learn to trust, hope, and believe in happiness again?

What I Thought: I've been hitting home runs with book choices lately. This was another absolutely amazing novel. While there was a real and honest love story lingering in the background of this, the front and center story was something that is so much more important to me: a story of a girl and her father.

The family dynamic is fantastic in this story and I believed every second of it. Some of the relationships between friends or other peers wasn't exactly as spot on, but I adored the family story so much that the rest of it didn't matter to me. Both Rowan's relationships with her mother and father are so strong and realistic and a little bit strained because of her being a teenager, but they feel real. There's also the relationship between her and her grandparents and also a really lovely bit with the mother and the grandmother and how they interact too. I don't read a lot of books that are family driven, so I really appreciated this one.

This book does have trigger warnings for death and more than one suicide, so be prepared for that, but the sadness of this book is such a good, real, deep down sadness that makes this book so fantastic.

Read this if: you want to read about a family and not a boy and a girl.
We weren't always like this. We used to be average New York City high school sophomores. Until our homeroom went for flu shots. We were prepared for some side effects. Maybe a headache. Maybe a sore arm. We definitely didn't expect to get telepathic powers. But suddenly we could hear what everyone was thinking. Our friends. Our parents. Our crushes. Now we all know that Tess is in love with her best friend, Teddy. That Mackenzie cheated on Cooper. That, um, Nurse Carmichael used to be a stripper.

Since we've kept our freakish skill a secret, we can sit next to the class brainiac and ace our tests. We can dump our boyfriends right before they dump us. We know what our friends really think of our jeans, our breath, our new bangs. We always know what's coming. Some of us will thrive. Some of us will crack. None of us will ever be the same.
So stop obsessing about your ex. We're always listening.

What I Thought: I absolutely adored this book. It was SUCH a unique premise, and it was executed so beautifully. I really love that instead of one perspective or even alternating chapters, the story is told from the collective point of view of the entire ensemble cast. It's a really great narrative of a singular voice with everyone chiming in their own thoughts and experiences.

Speaking of that cast, every single character was so developed and fleshed out better than most single narratives I've read recently. They interacted with each other brilliantly, and they were fantastic both as a a group and as individuals.

We got to see the group of students in school and how they interacted with each other and also other students, and there were also some fantastic glimpses of different home lives as well. I just love everything about this book.

I love Sarah Mlynowski and this book was absolutely no exception to her brilliance.

Read this if: you want something that is truly unique in a genre of ever predictable and repetitive stories.
So I have another tee project for you guys today. This one was actually a request I got a few weeks ago, on how to turn a tee into a pillow. Well, I had been holding off on it because I didn’t have a shirt to use and I hadn’t had a chance to get to a thrift store to find one, but then I got a shirt in the mail from Taco Bell? I don’t remember ordering it, but maybe I did. Either way, thanks, Taco Bell!

Besides the shirt, I used a sewing machine, a 16”x16” pillow form and some velcro. You can hand sew or use gluing options here, and you can also substitute snaps for the velcro or just choose to have it not open at the back if you don’t mind not being able to wash it.
I decided to use one of the side seams of the shirt and have the print be off-centered, but if you’d prefer to have the design centered, just center the pillow form inside the shirt instead of pushing it to one side like I did.
Once you’ve pinned all around the sides, go ahead and sew that up. Make sure that you leave the bottom open so that you can, uh, you know, put the pillow in! Be sure that you back stitch.

Go ahead and put the pillow form back into the shirt to make sure that it’s the right size BEFORE YOU CUT. Seriously, You don’t want to cut and realize it’s too big or worse, too small. Once you know it’s the right size, you can trim off the excess around the top and sides. Don’t trim anything off of the bottom yet though.

Now, I want to be able to take my pillow out and wash the case if I spill something on it or if it gets dirty or whatever, so I’m going to make mine so that the flap will close on the back. If you don’t want to do that, you can just sew up the bottom here and have a finished pillow. However, I’m both a slob and a neat freak simultaneously, so washing needs to be an option.

Cut up the side seams and almost all the way to the pillow form, but leave just a little bit hanging over. I love sewing with tees because the fabric is amazing. It doesn’t unravel, or fray or anything so there’s no need to hem anything when you sew with it. So, I’m just leaving that bit unhemmed. Feel free, but you won’t see it when the pillow is closed up.
I stayed right inside the original bottom hem of the shirt. You want it pinned so that you can fold it over to the back and velcro it in place. Then, fold up the flap and use chalk or a crayon to mark on the back of the pillow where the other side of the velcro should be. Do this with the form inside so that you can keep track of how it should sit with the added bulk of the pillow. Once you have it marked up, go ahead and pin the other side of the velcro along that line.
Here it is finished, both front and back. As you can see it is flat in the front and then has the closure flap in the back. You can kind of see the white velcro a little bit, so it that bothers you, you can get a dark colored velcro at most fabric stores.
Publisher: Running Press Kids
Format: ARC from netgalley

Summary from Goodreads:
"Thick. Heavy. Big boned. Plump. Full figured. Chunky. Womanly. Large. Curvy. Plus-size. Hefty." To sixteen-year-old Emery Jackson, these are all just euphemisms for the big "F" word—"fat." Living on a Southern California beach with her workout fiend dad, underwear model sister, and former model mother, it is impossible for Emery not to be aware of her weight.

Emery is okay with how things are. That is, until her "momager" signs her up for Fifty Pounds to Freedom, a reality show in which Emery will have to lose fifty pounds in fifty days in order to win the million dollars that will solve her family's financial woes. Emery is skeptical of the process, but when the pounds start to come off and the ratings skyrocket, she finds it hard to resist the adoration of her new figure and the world of fame. Emery knows that things have changed. But is it for the better?

What I Thought: This was a book I ended up liking more than I expected to. It had a really interesting family dynamic and some really great supporting characters, in addition to the main character also being decently likeable. I also thought it was an interesting premise, with the reality show storyline.

The best part of this was definitely the background story of the family. I definitely wanted to know more about them and how they got themselves to be where they were.

The biggest complaint I had about this book, was that the ending was VERY abrupt. I wish it would have been just a bit longer to wrap up and finalize things better. Overall though, I thought it was paced well. It just needed a more complete ending.

Read this if: you like family type stories, or if you're interested in a different look at reality shows.
What I Thought: OH MAN was this amazing. I was given this as a birthday gift from my aunt this year, and I've never seen anything like this before. The first quarter or so of the book is a detailed rundown of all of the movies- how actors were hired, how intense parts of the set were designed, and problems run into. There are lots of interviews and quotes from both the cast and crew and so much good behind the scenes information.

The rest of the book is broken down into Characters, Locations, Creatures, and Artifacts and is full of amazing pictures and information on everything. There are so many beautiful concept art pictures and actual shots from set and continuity pictures and just, so much beauty in this book.

I was so lucky to be gifted this, and I highly recommend it to any Harry Potter fan.
Sherry Shahan's SKIN AND BONES, pitched as ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST meets LOVE STORY set in an eating disorder hospital in which an aspiring ballerina and a quirky nerdboy fall desperately in love only to become each other's next deadly addiction

What I Thought: First off: this book needs a SERIOUS trigger warning for eating disorders.

Besides that, I thought that this book was sort of just okay. I thought that it would be like It's Kind of a Funny Story, and I guess in a way it was, but there wasn't really much plot resolution in this story at all. It was an interesting character study, but the story didn't really go anywhere.

I also was a little disappointed by how much the "aspiring ballerina" was just a manic pixie dream girl that the "quirky nerdboy" decides to get better for- despite the fact that they aren't actually together and she doesn't really seem interested in giving him the time of day.

Overall, I was a bit disappointed.

Read this if: you're interested in a story with out much plot and don't mind a serious manic pixie dream girl.
For Macallan and Levi, it was friends at first sight. Everyone says guys and girls can’t be just friends, but these two are. They hang out after school, share tons of inside jokes, their families are super close, and Levi even starts dating one of Macallan’s friends. They are platonic and happy that way.
Guys won’t ask Macallan out because they think she’s with Levi, and Levi spends too much time joking around with Macallan, and maybe not enough time with his date. They can’t help but wonder . . . are they more than friends or are they better off without making it even more complicated?

What I Thought: I really liked this book A LOT. While there was a somewhat predictable storyline, the way the story was told was pretty unique and I liked it a lot. First, while it was told from both perspectives, there was also a third perspective: at the end of ever set of chapters/perspectives, there was a bit of dialogue from the two characters in present tense, looking back and reflecting on the situation, which I thought was pretty cool.

I thought that this story moved along nicely and I really like that the focus was so much on friendships and the stresses that play into friendships. Instead of primarily being a book about a romantic relationship, this book was so much about two people truly being friends.

I also liked the family dynamic a lot in this book: the parents were so involved in their lives and were supportive and not mysteriously absent as is the case in most YA.

Read this if: you're interested in a different perspective, if you care about friendships or if you want a nice, easy read.

What I Thought: This book was silly, and predictable but exactly what I needed to bust out of my month long reading slump. At no point in this book was I surprised, or on the edge of my seat, but I really genuinely liked this book regardless, and I read it in one sitting.

The story is actually pretty unique: boy and girl grow up together and are best friends since literal birth, girl is in love with him and boy doesn't know, he tries to back off on friendship which devastates her and she turns getting over the broken heart into a science fair project with the help of HIS BROTHER. Of course you probably already know exactly how this book ends but honestly. I liked it.

The pacing was decent, the two different voices of Avery and Grayson were developed and strong and even the minor characters were really great. I honestly thing Avery's best friend, a very minor character, was my favorite part of this book. Finally, this book didn't follow the trope of popular kids are mean, science kids are socially awful, etc. The portrayal of both "cliques" felt more true than a lot of YA books, and the depiction of nerd culture wasn't terrible either.

Read this if: you're looking for a quick read, and want something that's a little bit unique but still pretty predictable, or if you just want a cute, easy romance.

What I Thought: Honestly, I don't know if I really gave this book a fair shot. I was in a terrible reading slump and this book sort of got caught in the middle of that. I LOVED Cinder & Scarlet but this book was definitely my least favorite of the series, so far. The build up of it was really slow, and the actual exciting parts of the book were kind of "too much, too late" for me.

Also, normally I adore books from multiple perspectives but for some reason the very many perspectives in this book were just too much for me. This is why I think my lack of loving this book was due to the book slump; one of my favorite book styles was one of the reasons I didn't like this one. I might have to give this one a reread in the future to hopefully enjoy it more.

All of that being said, I am still so very excited for the fourth book, Winter, to come out sometime next year.

Read this if: you can follow upwards of four perspectives at once, if you like dystopias, if you want a really fun retelling of fairy tales.

Hey guys! Today I want to show you how to do a project that is great for any nerdy crafters. I’m going to show you how to use perler beads to make an 8-bit necklace! This translates really well into most video games and cartoon characters because they convert so nicely into 8-bit, if they aren’t already.
For this project, I’m going to be making a Pokeball necklace, but these simple steps will give you what you need to do any perler beading and there are a TON of patterns online if you don’t think you can come up with your own.

You can get perler bead kits for super cheap in most craft stores or walmart/target and this is a GREAT project for kids too, just be sure to supervise with small beads and hot irons.
When I work with a square or other angular perler pegboard, I usually do the outline first, but for a cicrular project I find starting in the middle works best. So, for this project I’ll be starting with the white center of the Pokeball. Then, I’ll work out and around. A couple of tips to keep in mind here:
1. I found that using a pair of long tweezers works best for this. They aren’t required, but they help.
2. Be SO careful not to bump or jostle your beads while you’re working. They move a lot, and trust me, it sucks to have to start over when you’re almost finished.
3. Take you time. It’ll be worth it in the end.

Your kit probably came with some parchment paper, and this is where that comes in. If you don’t have any, regular kitchen parchment works! Cover the design while it’s still on the pegboard and iron over it in circular motions.

My instructions said 10-15 seconds but that was definitely not long enough for me. Just keep an eye on it and when you can’t really see the holes in the beads any more, you’re good. Again, be careful because hot irons are hot. Then, peel off the paper, flip it over, put the paper back on and iron the other side.

If you want to stop here, you can & then add a magnet or whatever else you want to glue on, or just keep it as a decorative piece. However, if you want to make it a necklace or a keychain, let’s keep going.
Using needle nose pliers, poke through the fused plastic. Pick a spot where there was a bead hole so it’s easier to get through. It might take some force, but I promise it’ll work. For a keychain you could just make one hole, and for a necklace you could make one or two, depending on how you want it to hang.
Release Date: July 11, 1960
Publisher: J. B. Lippincott
Format: Mass Market Paperback

Summary from Goodreads:

"You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view .. until you climb into his skin and walk around in it."

Tomboy Scout Finch comes of age in a small Alabama town during a crisis in 1935. She admires her father Atticus, how he deals with issues of racism, injustice, intolerance and bigotry, his courage and his love.

What I Thought: This is another one of my Crash Course Literature rereads, and a book that I initially hated. This book is a long-standing favorite of my grandfather's (hi pop!) and a source of tension between us when I refused to read it growing up. Then, when I had to read it in high school, I really didn't like it. That probably has something to do with the way it was taught, but I just didn't. I reread it again for a college course on teaching literature, and designing curriculum for it made me like it a bit more, but I still wasn't a big fan. This might have been the read through that changed my mind.

I definitely have a sense of appreciation for this novel that I didn't have at 15, or even really at 20. I understand a lot better the cultural significance of the story and the politics of it, and I even really appreciate Scout's narrative.

I don't think that I'll ever LOVE To Kill a Mockingbird, but I do like it a lot. Like I said, Scout's narrative is wonderful, Jem's changing and growing feels true to life, and Atticus is such a complex character, bridging the gap between a father and a freethinker in a close-minded town. I don't know if this is a book that should be read in high school, but it's definitely a book that should be read, and I like it more every time I read it.

Read this if: you've read it before and didn't like it, but are older now. Really. That's who should read this.
I’ve got a new organization DIY for you this week.

This is a great upcycled or recycled project from a cereal box. I used a family size box of Lucky Charms because I’m a high functioning adult who eats a nutritious breakfast on a daily basis, but you can use whatever you’ve got around.

Besides the box, you need duct tape, scissors and a marker. A ruler and X-acto knife will help, but aren’t really needed. As an aside, I like to use two different tapes for this- something plain for the sides and then a pattern or print on the front, but that’s just my personal preference. Also, I don’t label mine because I’m always cutting up and destroying magazines, but you can add labels onto yours if you want.

To start with, use your magazine to determine how high the back should be. You want it to be just a tad bit bigger than the biggest magazine you plan to keep in the box. You also need to decide how high you want the front to come up. I make all of mine about 4 inches so that I can read the name of the magazine, but you can play around and see what works for you.

Then, take your ruler and connect the two lines along the sides of the box. You'll be drawing the diagonal lines that make up the major shape of the box.

Using your scissors or an X-acto knife, cut around the lines you drew on all four sides. Please be careful. Do not cut yourself. Seriously. When you’re done, you have a shape that looks startlingly like a magazine holder.

Once your shape is cut out, it’s time to add some stability to the box, as well as covering up the box to make it a bit prettier. Like I said, I like to cover the two sides with a solid color, so I used blue on this one.

Cut out strips and overlap them just a tiny bit to cover the entire thing. Wrap the tape down onto the bottom and also tuck the end into the top cut edge. It’s kind of ugly inside but once it’s full of magazines, you won’t be able to tell and it’s really not worth the hassle to cover the inside too.

After both sides are done, I recommend adding a strip along the bottom as well to both cover all of the ends of tape and to also add just a little bit more stability and keep the box from opening if you lift it.

Then, using a contrasting patterned tape, cover up the front and back. You’ll need two strips of tape for this, and since this is the part that’ll be seen, I like to lay out the two strips and line up the pattern first, so that it looks as nice as possible on the shelf.

Then, fill it with magazines and stick it on your shelf! As you can see, I have quite a few of these because I love magazines so much. Like I said, I don’t label mine because I’m always cutting up magazines for different projects so my collection isn’t consistent, but it would be cute to print out little miniature copies of the covers and glue them on to identify what’s in each one.

If you don’t have duct tape or want to try something else, two suggestions I have are to either paint your box, or to collage onto it.

If you do this, I definitely want to see it, so send me a picture on twitter or instagram @techni_moments!

Stay crafty!
Who Done It
Release Date: February 12th 2013
Publisher: Soho Teen
Format: ARC from half.com

Summary from Goodreads:
Can you imagine the most cantankerous book editor alive? Part Voldemort, part Cruella de Vil (if she were a dude), and worse in appearance and odor than a gluttonous farm pig? A man who makes no secret of his love of cheese or his disdain of unworthy authors? That man is Herman Mildew.

The anthology opens with an invitation to a party, care of this insufferable monster, where more than 80 of the most talented, bestselling and recognizable names in YA and children’s fiction learn that they are suspects in his murder. All must provide alibis in brief first-person entries. The problem is that all of them are liars, all of them are fabulists, and all have something to hide...

What I Thought: I had a really hard time getting my hands on this book, and I really wanted to read it it because there were so many good authors featured in it, so by the time I got a copy my anticipation for it was REALLY high.

Overall, I liked this book, but I didn't love it. I loved some of the individual stories or alibis, and some I really didn't like and thought were quite boring. I liked the unified characterization despite the varying writing styles and I really liked that they were able to maintain that consistency. I also liked this book for finding new authors because I was able to get brief samples from a TON of different authors.

My main problem was that there wasn't really a good conclusion or wrap up, it just sort of ended. I wanted there to be more of a storyline than just a bunch of unconnected stories. I would have loved more interaction between the different alibis as well.

Read this if: you're a YA fan, you want a quick read, or if you like not-really-mysterious mysteries.
Summary from Goodreads:

The extraordinary journey that began in Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children continues as Jacob Portman and his newfound friends journey to London the peculiar capital of the world. But in this war-torn city, hideous surprises lurk around every corner. Like its predecessor, this second novel in the Peculiar Children series blends thrilling fantasy with never-before-published vintage photography to create a one-of-a-kind reacting experience.

What I Thought: I was so excited when this book came out, and I was NOT disappointed by it. I read Miss Peregrine as soon as it was published in 2011, and adored it. The wait for this sequel was painful- but so worth it.

The best part about Hollow City was how it was equal parts compelling love story and just creepy enough to make me jumpy. The found pictures helped to tell the bizarre story, and we got even more history and background of how peculiars are and live.

I had a hard time putting this book down. The story is enthralling from beginning to end, picking up exactly where Peregrine left off and ending with a huge twist. I loved this book from beginning to end, which doesn't often happen for me. This was my first 5 star book of the year.

The worst part about this novel was the cliffhanger ending- now we get to wait until who-knows-when for the third part of the trilogy.
Summary from Goodreads:

Not too long ago, in a town that, depending on your current location, is either not super far or actually quite close... (insert Star Wars theme music here...)

It is a time of chaotic hormones.

Two nerdy gents home for winter break have discovered a female gamer at a midnight release.

During the break, the gamer trio manages to reveal the game's secret boss, a hidden enemy with enough power to destroy anything in its path.

Pursued by other gamers who want to be the first to beat this boss, George and Katie race to level up, and, in so doing, restore decency and sexual activity to their personal galaxy...

What I Thought: Liking this book was a surprise to me. I thought that the plot sounded cute, but predictable and that it would a be a quick, decent read, but nothing special. I ended up being quite surprised by this book, because there's more to it than the summary gives.

The characters were pretty realistic and believable- neither the male nor female main characters fell flat. Also, this book was told from dual perspectives which is definitely my favorite thing ever. Even the secondary characters were pretty developed and interesting. I really liked the pacing in this book. It moved just quickly enough to feel like winter break speeding by, but it didn't go too quickly either.

Finally, this book had some great pop culture references. Besides the expected video game references, there were also some fantastic allusions to tv and movies. If your book casually quotes Firefly, I'm so there.

I did however have one complaint, and that was some of the language used in the book. Granted, the authors were recreating the language you'd expect from teenagers on xbox, but still, I was uncomfortable with some of the casual uses of "rape," for example. However, in the context of the book, I do understand the choice to use it.
